OPENING | Los Colibris - Toronto's first upscale Mexican dining experience

Los Colibris is Toronto's first upscale Mexican dining venue located right next to El Caballito (read our review here). Los Colibros translates into hummingbirds and it's no surprise why this name was chosen as hummingbirds play an important part in Mexican culture where many believe fallen warriors are reincarnated as hummingbirds.

Upon entering, you automatically come to the conclusion that this is no ordinary Mexican restaurant. The decor and interior  definitely showcases a more sophisticated level of dining.

The private dining room

Lounge area right in front of the bar. We absolutely love that the lounge area is not just an area with bar stools, you can actually sit and have a conversation before being seated at a table.

The pineapple margarita house cocktail is a must if you're going to start your meal with a drink. The tequila is subtle enough without overpowering the taste of the pineapple.

Ceviche Blanco - shrimp, coconut, serrano, ginger. The coconut really gives the ceviche a kick to your palette.

Tortita de Mole con Pollo - cemita bread, mole pablano, pulled chicken, white onion, avocado

Camarones a la Diabla - grilled shrimp, fresh corn puree, arbol guajillo adobo

Rajas Poblanas - chicken, panela, corn, poblano, handmade flour or corn tortilla

Cerdo en Mancha Mantel - confit pork belly in adobo sauce, black bean tamal, pineapple salsa, broccoli

Huachinango a la Veracruzana - red snapper, seasonal vegetables, spicy Veracruz sauce, poblano rice

Mini Ice Cream Cones - guava and soup sop

Some of our favourite dishes of the night include the Rajas Poblanos, Cerdo en Mancha Mantel and Ceviche Blanco.

The Tortita de Mole con Pollo was a bit on the dry side with the bun and the tamal could have used a little more seasoning but the rest of the dishes were very tasty. Keep in mind that this is finer Mexican dining so do not expect to see prices that you would normally see at a local taco restaurant.
