With its blended entrance, dark interior and mysterious
atmosphere, D.W Alexander is reminiscent of an upscale British gentleman’s club.
Located at the corner of Church and Front, it is a mere 10 minute walk from
Union station and plentiful parking in the Downtown Distillery District.
This premium cocktail bar opened just in time to celebrate Toronto's 180th birthday. When we were invited to celebrate, we didn't hesitate to attend.
A bit of a background story on how the name came to be - D.W. Alexander was actually a well-known dealer for leather & hides that eventually became the largest sole leather trade in Western Canada. In his era, the late 1870s, taverns were located by factories and warehouses to cater to the workers after a long day. The new D.W. Alexander establishment does a great job fusing the 1870s era with a contemporary twist.
The interior layout of the newly renovated lounge that was once The Foundation Room is certainly well conceived. Once you enter and head downstairs, you are immediately greeted by the bar, where you can grab a drink and then move further into the lounge to find spacious seating. Although the overall atmosphere of the lounge is dimly lit, the seating area offers enough lighting.

Although we were not able to sample a wide variety of the
food offered at D.W Alexander, we can say with certainty that the drinks alone
are worth a trip there. D.W Alexander definitely seemed more fitting for drinks with friends or co-workers after a long day at work, rather than a sit
down meal.
