As part of Lincoln MKZ`s savour the city marketing campaign (read about the event night at Sassafraz here),
we were given the beautiful MKZ for a weekend to drive around town in style and a dining card for a
restaurant. Along with a few recommendations and a craving for
seafood, we finally decided on Starfish Oyster Bed & Grill for our Lincoln date night.
At first glance, the inside of the restaurant is very casual and rustic. It makes you feel like you are in a restaurant on the East Coast! We loved that the atmosphere of the restaurant was very welcoming.
We started with a few appetizers, none of which were oysters
since neither of us (Clara & date) particularly enjoy eating raw oysters.
The bread that you start with is an herb bread that is baked in
oil. It was quite tasty with the crispy texture on the outside and soft on the
inside. The bread didn`t seem too oily despite the fact that it was baked in oil, and we appreciated that!
Shrimp Chowder – Not
what we expected as we thought the chowder would be cream based but it was a
tomato based chowder. I would still
definitely prefer a creamy chowder and the shrimp chowder resembled too much of
a pasta sauce.
House Smoked Halibut Fishcakes – The fishcakes were a delicious way to start the meal as they
were very fresh and full of flavour. We would definitely recommend ordering the
fishcakes!
P.E.I mussels steamed
in white wine, garlic, and cream, served with house cut frites – The
mussels were an excellent portion and tasted very light in the white wine cream
sauce. The fries with the mayonnaise was a little bit of a disappointment and
the fries were a little bit overcooked and tasted greasy.
Rainbow trout – The
rainbow trout was delicious and a light entrée after having two appetizers.
There was a hint of sweetness in the sauce and the fish was cooked just right.
Overall, we found the meal to be average but this restaurant
would probably cater better to someone who enjoys shucked oysters - Monica would love this place. The restaurant 's owner, Patrick McMurray is the World Oyster Shucking Champion and Guinness World Record Holder.
Again, the ambiance of the restaurant was very laid back and casual and may seem a bit loud at times as the tables are very close to one another. Our appetizers came out very fast but we had to wait quite a while for the main entrees to come out.
