Toronto
is no stranger to cafés, waffle and crepe joints and desserts in general. You’ll
be able to satisfy your sweet tooth whether you’re looking for an over the top creation
or something simple. As a weekend excursion, we ventured over to MillieCreperie – Kensington Market’s newest resident.
When
I think of crepes, my mind doesn’t automatically jump to a sit down restaurant
with a pretty crepe on a plate. This might be influenced by the time I spent
living in Asia recently where crepes are a grab and go culinary culture. In
Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, you get your cones wrapped up in paper and you’re
off on your way. That’s exactly the kind of crepes that Millie Creperie offers
with their Japanese crepes.
They offer various menus for crepes or you can choose your own toppings.
We
tried the Mango Tango Crepe ($5.95) with whipped cream, mango gelato and strawberries.
Japanese crepes tend to be a bit sweeter than their French counterparts so it’s
important to keep that in mind when you’re adding your crepe fillings. The
mango gelato was tart without losing its flavour and complimented the thin
and light crepe well.
They make the crepes right in front of you so you can be sure you are getting the freshest crepe possible!
One crepe obviously wasn't enough, so we ordered the Banana Split Crepe ($6.95) with bananas, vanilla gelato and whipped cream. Again, their gelato flavours are very strong and the vanilla was no exception. A few nuts on the top would have sealed the deal for me!
My personal favourite was the Green Tea Parfait ($5.95) with cornflakes, whipped cream, green tea gelato and azuki beans. I might be slightly biased as I love anything green tea related but regardless the parfait was well balanced with all of its components. Cornflakes in desserts and parfaits are making a comeback after being overshadowed by granola. It really adds that crunch that just takes the dessert to the next level.
They
also have an assortment of gelatos that you can get a taste for before deciding
which one you want in your own personal crepe. A close second to my favourite
green tea gelato would be the hazelnut gelato. It tasted like a Ferrero Rocher
in every bite.
If
you are worried about what to do in the winter when you don’t feel like having
ice cream, not to worry – they have savoury crepes as well. Savoury crepes are
a whole new experience for your palette if you're only familiar with dessert crepes and definitely worth a try!
