I rarely get a craving specific to dumplings but when I do, I'll go to far lengths to satisfy it. Luckily for me, when I got the craving this time, I was already at Metro Square and dumplings were just a few steps away at Chinese Dumpling House.
By no means does the front of the restaurant look like a Michelin star restaurant but that's not what I'm looking for when I need to get dumplings. It's a fairly big restaurant and hard to miss at Metro Square.
First we started with the Green Onion Pancake. It was a great way to start the meal and it wasn't too oily which is hard to come by especially at restaurants where its more about quantity then quality.
We also ordered the Steamed Pork & Cabbage Dumplings. Don't confuse this kind of dumpling with the soup dumplings in Shanghai cuisine. The dough on this dumpling is much thicker and doesn't have any soup in the dumpling. They were pretty filling and seasoned quite well.
We also ordered the Pork & Leek Pan-Fried Dumplings. When you first look at the plate, it might look like it was plated upside down but the fried side has to be face up so that it doesn't get too soggy. The pan fried dumplings were more aromatic than the steamed dumplings but not crispy enough to my liking.
Apparently we thought we could eat a lot more so we decided to order the Pan-Fried version of the Pork & Cabbage Dumplings. Again, it was more aromatic than the steamed version but I personally would stick to the steamed version.
Last but not least, we ordered the Braised Beef Noodles. The noodles were very good texture wise but the broth could of had more flavour. The braised beef was very tender and had the right texture.
The restaurant itself is not very big and we went on a weekday for a late lunch so it wasn't busy but I would imagine that if you went right at lunch time, the place would be pretty packed and not a lot of room to walk around.
Overall, the restaurant was good, all of that food only cost about $25 for two people. We had leftovers as well and felt incredibly full so we probably could have gotten away with ordering much less! For the price and convenience, Chinese Dumpling House is definitely a good place to go for a quick bite!
