My usual routine when I visit Markham is to have lunch at Ding Tai Fung for some Shanghai cuisine but a friend recently recommended Mei Nung Beef Noodle House for fresh hand cut noodles.
Most lunch Chinese restaurants with the exception of dim sum in my opinion should be considered fast food. The atmosphere there is not for you to chat and take your time but to order, eat and get on with your day.
Mei Nung is no exception with its simple décor and set up. Brace yourself before walking in though because you will be blasted with the smell of stinky tofu as soon as you enter. It’s not a problem for those who love stinky tofu but for others who have a more sensitive sense of smell may find it a bit overwhelming.
The menu can be a bit daunting at first glance because there are many sections and all the English names seem to sound and look the same. We ended up ordering three different types of noodles. All the noodles come in small or regular size. Even though the small bowl looks like it may not be enough, the noodles are thick and very filling!
We ordered the Beef Tendon Noodle Soup ($5.99). The beef tendon was so soft and succulent and it almost immediately melts into your mouth! It paired very well with the chewiness of the noodles.
We also ordered the Beef Noodle Soup ($5.99). See how the names are pretty similar? This was the same thing as the beef tendon but without the tendon of course and just beef. The broth of both noodle bowls were a bit salty for my liking and this is one noodle bowl where I won’t be rushing to finish all the soup.
The last noodle bowl was the Beef & Sesame Paste. This one was a bit different as it wasn’t a soup based broth but a thicker sesame paste that you mix with the noodles. The taste of the sesame wasn’t as strong as I would have liked but it was still enjoyable.
For a quick bite in the Markham area, I would definitely recommend heading over to Mei Nung Beef Noodle House. The meal is worth the price but be weary of the pungent smell of the stinky tofu or maybe you’ll be daring enough to try an order!
