Dak Galbi (Spiced Chicken) is a popular South Korean dish that everyone should try. In Toronto, Joon's Korean Cuisine is known as the place to go for Dak Galbi and you can definitely tell, as they always have a full house.
There are two locations in Toronto for Joon's - by Christie/Bathurst Station on Bloor Street, or in North York on Yonge Street.
The dish consists of marinated chicken pieces in spicy sauce with cabbage pieces along with add-on toppings such as: rice cake (a must), ramyun noodles, vermicelli noodles, extra veggies, and mozzarella cheese (another must).
I like to add on: rice cake, ramyun noodles and mozzarella cheese. I know it sounds like a weird combination, but it's DELICIOUS - I kid you not!
They cook the Dak Galbi in a big sharing pot on your table and check up on you often to make sure it's cooking well to your liking. They also give you 3 side dishes that vary from time to time: mashed potato salad, kimchi and fishcakes - nothing special.
After the chicken is cooked, in goes the noodles. When it's mixed in well with the sauce, the mozzarella cheese is sprinkled on top *drool* - Once the cheese is melted, bon appetite!
Even though the dish itself is super red, it's not too spicy. It has a bit of a kick, which I love and the chicken is tender. I love the noodles & rice cake the most. All the different texture of each food combined together compliment each other well.
When you're almost done, you can ask for them to add rice in with the leftover sauce and chicken. The server will bring sesame oil and rice to mix it together for you.
You'll definitely leave this place satisfied and full. Once you have Dak Galbi, you will be wanting more!
