Just a couple of weeks after my first visit to El Caballito Tequila Bar during it's soft opening (read review here), we were invited back for their official media launch event. Of course, without hesitation we accepted as I couldn't wait to indulge myself in their Fituras Mixtas again and to try the Antojitos that I missed out on last time!
This time around, the restaurant space looked much more settled with more tables & seatings, unique light fixtures by Clase Azul tequila bottles and their private tequila tasting room. I personally loved the cozy and rustic atmosphere and the series of wall murals inspired by the works of Mexican artist Jose Posada.
One thing to note, every midnight, the restaurant will be serving up their "Midnight Taco," which will vary night to night. Their first "Midnight Taco" will be a brisket taco so make sure you head to El Caballito in the wee hours of the night to get your bite. Don't forget to share your photo using the hashtag #MidnightTaco!
The restaurant features a space for large groups as well.
The menu, created by Mexico-trained Executive Chef Elia Herrera is reflective of authentic Mexican dishes and complemented by the extensive tequila offerings and cocktails by Bar Manager, Manny Contreras.
Fituras Mixtas - house made totopos, plantain, sweet potato & taro chips w/ salsas (matcha/roja/verde/cruda).
Manny's Margarita - pink peppercorn & junisper infused tromba, citrus, triple sec & agave.
Flank Steak Tacos - bell peppers, roasted onions, salda verde asada & cow's milk cheese.
Polanco - mezcal, lillet, drambuie & plum bitters.
Tamarind Ceviche - jicama tacos, cod, mango, coriander. This was my favourite dish of the night!
Quesadilla De Quintero - zucchini, bell pepper, cheese, salsa roja & corn tortilla
Molote De Tinga - puebla empanadas with chicken, tomato soffrito, chipotle, cruda asada & cortija cheese.
Michelada - tecate pale lager, fresh lime juice with a salted rim.
Jalapeño Releno - pickled & stuffed jalapeño, pork picadillo, almonds & refried beans.
Churros Y Natilla - Mexican cinnamon doughnuts with vanilla custard.
After our delicious meal, we were invited into Manny's Tequila Tasting Room. Now, this is something new, isn't it? This private room has been created for small groups to taste and learn about some of Mexico's finest tequilas and mezcals.
This was very unique and tasting Tequila, as you do with wine, was such an experience!
“We want to introduce the incredible world of Mexican tequila and mezcal to our guests. Too many people only think of tequila as cheap shots, when in reality, it’s a beautiful, delicious spirit meant to be savoured,” said Manny Contreras, bar manager.
Let us know how you like the new spot in the King West neighbourhood, home of the Midnight Taco!
