This little shop, famous for its Vietnamese Sub Sandwiches, also called Banh Mi has been making waves in Toronto since it opened its first store in 2011. Their menu is simple with three different items - Banh Mi, Steamed Baos and Tacos with various ingredients.
There are hundreds of reviews out there, most of them positive, so we made a trip to their newer second store, conveniently located on Yonge & Gerrard. You can spot this shop with a big red star on their banner. The front of the store provides an open window, which is perfect for summer.
It's not a big store. There's about 25 seatings available so when it's busy, you'll have to wait a bit to get a seat. However, diners usually don't' stay more than 30 minutes.
They have an open kitchen, which we personally like as we can see how everything is made. It's also a sign of a honest restaurant that's proud of their fresh ingredients and transparent cooking.
The above and below pictures show what Clara got, the Five Spice Pork Belly Banh Mi, braised pork belly and pickled radish server on baguette, house mayo, picked carrots, cucumber and cilantro.
The pickled veggies really bring out the flavours of the main ingredient - pork belly. The baguette is very soft and easy to bite into. It is unbelievably delicious.
I got the Galbi Beef Banh Mi, which consists of marinated short ribs, kimchi and asian BBQ sauce with pickled cucumber, carrots and cilantro. This was really tasty as well! I usually HATE cilantro (people usually love it or hate it) but I didn't mind it at all on this sandwich.
These sandwiches are priced pretty low and you get a good portion out of it. The marinated galbi was my favourite of the two as it had more flavours, probably from the marinated galbi!
We had to get the Kimchi Fries to share. It's basically fries with pulled pork, kimchi, green onions and mayo. Sounds simple enough but the combination of flavours really entice your taste buds. It's a must-try at this place! We would go back just for the fries.
One bad news, while we were indulging in the fries, I found a piece of hair in it... Took it to the cashier and she replaced our box of fries with a whole new one. At other places, finding something other than what's supposed to be in the food will turn us off... but we enjoyed the new kimchi fries and forgot about the unpleasant surprise - it's just that good!
Whether you're around Yonge & Gerrard or on Queen & Spadina, be sure to pick up a sandwich and fries! Your stomach will be thanking you.
Is this restaurant run by Koreans?
